How to Buy Baby and Toddler Socks
With so many different brands and choices, trying to buy the right pair of socks for your child can be a stressful and confusing experience. Although you might be tempted to simply buy the first pair that catches your eye, it’s very important that you put some thought into what goes on your child’s feet. After all, baby socks are meant to keep your child comfortable and safe . To help you make an informed choice, here is a list of things you might want to consider:
Getting the right size of baby sock is essential if you want a good, comfortable fit. The most reliable way to do this is to measure the length of your child’s feet using a measuring tape or ruler (try to measure heel to toe as shown in the picture). The right sock size is simply the length of your baby’s foot in centimetres – don’t be tempted to go a size larger or a few centimetres more, or else you’ll end up with socks that are too loose and liable to fall off your baby’s feet.
If you don’t have a measuring tape handy, there’s no reason to fret - the right size of baby sock can also be approximated by age. You can use this handy chart to convert from your baby’s age to their foot length: Baby-Sock-Size-Chart
Organic cotton is the best material for baby socks because it’s much softer and lighter than alternatives such as wool. Although many brands advertise that their cotton socks are organic, it’s important you make sure that their products are 100% dye-free. This is because as soon as baby socks are dyed, they are no longer organic and could pose a threat to your baby’s health. Harmful chemicals in dyes are easily absorbed by the sensitive skin of babies and toddlers. See the following link for more information:
A good way to ensure that your baby socks are dye-free is to look for naturally-coloured organic cotton . This is a material which is made using special cotton plants that naturally grow in different colours. Naturally-coloured organic cotton socks are therefore free of all harmful dyes, while also remaining beautifully colourful.
It is common for baby socks to use cute logos or colourful and eye-catching designs in order to entice you to buy them. However, these colourful sock designs are actually a dangerous health risk for your child. These designs require many long strings to be placed on the inside of the sock. These strings can easily entangle your child’s toes (or capture long hairs which are also capable of tangling around toes). While this might only result in minor irritation and discomfort, there have been extreme cases in which these strings severely restricted the blood flow to babies’ toes, resulting in amputation! (See this link for more information: How-hidden-hairs-STRANGLE-babies-toes )
In order to prevent these risks, it is best to buy baby socks which have simple designs and which are primarily made from only a single colour. However, if you can’t bear to part with baby socks that are colourful and complex, at least make sure that any detailed designs are far away from the toe section of your baby’s socks.
One common complaint from parents is that their baby’s socks are too loose and often fall off too easily. This problem is caused by a sock’s welt (the part of a sock which wraps around the ankle). Cheap socks often use low quality spandex to construct their welts, and so this results in socks which are very loose. Sometimes, sock manufacturers will try to combat this problem by making their welts extremely tight. However, the low quality of spandex used results in welts which are far too tight – these types of cheap baby sock can often block blood circulation (look for red marks around your baby’s ankles if you are worried about this).
The welts of Pure’s baby socks are made from high quality spandex and employ a double layer protection design. This allows for baby socks which provide just the right level of gentle grip around the ankle – enough support to ensure the socks won’t slip off, while still being loose enough to allow the foot to move freely.
Finally, a concern which is often neglected when choosing what to buy is the effect of these choices on the environment. Buying a product from a certain company is the same as implicitly supporting that company’s ethos and business practices. It’s therefore extremely important to buy products from companies who conduct their business in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner.
Pure is a company which seeks to ensure that every element of its products are environmentally-friendly. All of Pure’s baby socks are made using naturally-coloured cotton which is 100% organic.
